School’s Out! #48 - Catherine Mosbach
Catherine Mosbach's lecture will be about "singularities". Communicating, exchanging and sharing form a keystone, an alliance between beings and environments - above & below the surface. We grasp a very small part of what is available beyond the visible and instant knowledge of the present. Landscape architects invest and initiate ways of multipurposes forms throughout time and space, with instruments and dynamics made available to as many people as possible. This aesthetic choice also reveals an ethic that fundamentally concerns the question of transmission... authentic function as “medium”, as “milieu”, an in-between, of mediation.
The question of the writing, over-writing or non-writing of a product, a production in the sense of the physical interpretation of a sensory, economic, and social event, is central. It is vital in order for landscape designers to be able to work freely. But the focus of our energies still needs to be defined. Must we adapt to a brand-oriented economy, subvert the issue of ecolabelling, or produce landscapes for the sake of real images, visual coalitions that strengthen the social imagination so that it does not forget where it comes from and does not fear its destiny? In deciphering the genealogies of collective experience, an individual cultivates the art of memory, engages with critical viewpoints, introduces differences through comparison, cultivates analogies by creating intervals, rescues images from general indifference, reconfigures the historical present by disarming the devices that make images irresponsible, so that they can join the taut flow that runs through our saturated memories.
About mosbach paysagisters
Catherine Mosbach is the founder of Paris-based design firm mosbach paysagiste. It has extensive experience with large-scale projects in urban landscapes with high heritage and environmental value. The skills of the studio are developed at different scales and landscape briefs in order to articulate natural resources with urban & cultural ones. The public facilities projects develop an integrated scenography between the landscape settlements & a didactic approach accessible to the public. Among the most representative are the Botanical Garden of Bordeaux, the Archaeological Park of Solutré or Louvre Lens Museum Park and more recently Phase Shifts Park in Taichung. These sites clearly expose the environmental, cultural, economic & urban dynamics linked to the constant mutations of contemporary life.
